The Tribal Marine Stewards Network (TMSN) is a partnership of Tribes, working collaboratively to protect and restore California’s oceans and ocean and environments. What is the TMSN?

The TMSN is a coalition of sovereign nations, working together to support co-management of their ancestral coast and ocean territories within what is currently known as California.

Who are the Tribes in the TMSN?

The four founding Tribes that are currently part of the Tribal Marine Stewards Network are Tolowa Dee-ni’ Nation, Resighini Rancheria, Kashia Band of Pomo Indians of the Stewarts Point Rancheria, and Amah Mutsun Tribal Band.

Can other Tribes join the TMSN?

Yes! The Network aims to grow intentionally so all member Tribes have the opportunity to be involved in a meaningful way. If you are a tribal staff person or tribal leader and are interested in joining the TMSN, please reach out to us so we can discuss how to partner.

What does the TMSN do?

The TMSN supports California Tribes in fulfilling their responsibility to steward ocean and coastal resources within their ancestral territories. The TMSN connects California Tribes, State Agencies, Universities and NGOs to support Tribal co-management of Ocean and Coast resources, particularly those within and adjacent to Marine Protected Areas. The TMSN supports Tribes as they implement projects dedicated to cultural practice, lands and waters stewardship, and education.

What organizations support the work of the TMSN?

The TMSN is invested in Tribally-led initiatives and Tribal co-management of the Network. We work with supporters who respect our Tribal sovereignty and contribute to our Tribal self-advocacy efforts. Supporters may include other Tribes, inter-Tribal organizations, government agencies, foundations, universities, and NGOs.

Can I donate to the TMSN?

There is not a mechanism presently for donating directly to the TMSN, but we absolutely encourage you to visit the websites of the individual tribes and give generously to their programs and initiatives.
